The Michigan Disabilities Rights Coalition and Her Power are hosting a Disability Pride weekend for parents* of children with disabilities 26-28 April in Rothbury, MI (about an hour west of Grand Rapids.) Full information on the event can be found HERE.

The facilitators for the weekend are Leah Smith and Theresa Metzmaker. I don’t know the latter, but I do know Leah and her advocacy work is fantastic. She and her also fantastic spouse Joe Stramondo are in the film adaptation of Andrew Solomon’s Far from The Tree, which is a wonderful but emotionally taxing book. (Leah also provided a generous early endorsement of my book.)
22 Advocacy will sponsor a parent or family who would like to go to this event. If you’re interested in attending through the support of 22 Advocacy, please email me at kevin.timpe@gmail.com.
(*According to the event webpage, “when we use the term parent, we are also including guardians and are embracing all types of families (i.e. same-sex partnerships, grandparents raising grandchildren, co-parenting, kinship and foster parents etc.). We support families of choice which can include parents, step-parents, domestic partners, neighbors, communities, religious leaders, and any other person the individual with a disability defines as a parent.”)
